Angela’s Lost Turtle – An Introduction by the Author – Patrick Carpen.<\/a><\/h1>\n

I’ve always dreamed of being a writer<\/a>, especially a writer<\/a> for children; but it took a really long time before I finally wrote my first children’s story<\/a> which was polished enough for publication. Three years and countless revisions later it went \u00a0into print.<\/p>\n

Today, my first published children’s book is in stores all over the world<\/a> and has been translated into several languages<\/a>; but how did the story<\/a> start?\"\"<\/p>\n

BASED ON A TRUE STORY<\/em><\/p>\n

A good friend of mine studying to become a Doctor at the University of Guyana really wanted to own a pet turtle. So, for her birthday, she bought herself a (guess what) turtle! Everyday, she would tell me stories<\/a> about her new pet turtle. She wasn’t 8 years old as the story<\/a> goes, she was 18; and her name wasn’t Angela, it was Sumelia. Quite a few facts were changed but the story<\/a> “Angela’s Lost Turtle” was based on very real events.<\/p>\n

One day, after she told me about how her turtle got lost, and how she found it back, I got inspired and wrote the story<\/a> “Angela’s Lost Turtle”. The first draft was completed in about 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

Angela’s Lost Turtle – Read The Book Online<\/h1>\n

Angela was seven years old, and all she wanted for her eighth birthday was a pet turtle.\u00a0She bugged her mom and dad, day in, day out, to go to the pet store to\u00a0buy a turtle. Angela\u2019s father was a bit skeptical at first. Could Angela really care for\u00a0 a turtle? What are some of the things she needed to know before she could\u00a0own a pet turtle? What does a pet turtle eat \u2026 ?<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right,\u201d her mother said, \u201ctomorrow is your eighth birthday, and we will go to the pet store and get you a pet turtle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Angela had never been so excited in her whole life. She jumped up and down and up and down.<\/p>\n

\"01\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The next day Angela, along with her mother and her father, set out for the pet store. There, Angela\u2019s eyes landed on the perfect turtle. It was big and black and pulled its head into its shell.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the turtle!<\/em>\u00a0Angela thought.\u00a0She wanted it.\u00a0She tugged her mother\u2019s dress. \u201cMommy! Mommy!\u201d she cried.\u00a0\u201cThere!\u201d<\/p>\n

And, pointing to the turtle, she exclaimed, \u201cThat\u2019s the turtle I want!\u201d<\/p>\n

So Angela\u2019s mother bought the turtle for her.<\/p>\n

\"02\"<\/a><\/p>\n

They taught Angela all about turtles. Turtles like lettuce. Turtles like clean water, light, shade, moisture, and sometimes a basking lamp. She may even need to set up a turtle pen outside since turtles often hibernate in\u00a0the fall. Angela will need to always wash her hands after dealing with her turtle, as turtles may sometimes carry a dangerous type of bacteria called Salmonella \u2026 . All these things were rehearsed to Angela in the days ahead.<\/p>\n

Angela had never felt happier or more excited about a birthday gift before. Everywhere she went, she took her turtle with her. She washed and\u00a0painted her turtle. She took her turtle to the park, to the candy shop, to the\u00a0library, to the grocery store \u2026 . She even took her turtle to school to show\u00a0her friends and teacher.<\/p>\n

\"03\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Her teacher, Miss Beverly, was very delighted to see Angela\u2019s turtle and taught the class for a whole hour about turtles.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurtles,\u201d she said, \u201care reptiles \u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n

The class gasped in fear, \u201cReptiles?! Does that mean they bite?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d explained the teacher, \u201cnot all reptiles are as dangerous as snakes and alligators. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals, which means that\u00a0their body temperature changes with their surroundings \u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained that reptiles breathe with their lungs and have skin covered with scales.\u00a0Then Miss Beverly asked, \u201cCan anyone give me another example of a\u00a0reptile?\u201d<\/p>\n

\"04\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There was a deafening silence for the next thirty seconds or so, and then, suddenly, Rosemary shot her hand up into the air in perfect zeal. Rosemary was famous for being the \u201cbright girl\u201d in the class, and the other kids wondered what had taken her so long.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Rosemary, go ahead,\u201d said the teacher.<\/p>\n

Rosemary stood boldly up and looked at the students all around her.<\/p>\n

\u201cChameleons,\u201d she declared splendidly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, Rosemary,\u201d said the teacher. \u201cNow let\u2019s continue. There are about three hundred species of turtles alive today \u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n

The class sat and listened eagerly as the teacher told them the wonderful stories about turtles.<\/p>\n

\"05\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then one day something very sad and frightening happened to Angela\u2019s turtle. It was lost! Or\u2026maybe stolen! She had left it in the flowerpot downstairs for a break, and when she returned, her dear little Speedy was gone.\u00a0Angela became a bit worried at first, but she was determined to find\u00a0Speedy, her turtle.<\/p>\n

Where could she have gone?<\/em>\u00a0she wondered.<\/p>\n

She looked all around \u2026 back and front \u2026 inside and outside \u2026 but Angela\u2019s turtle was nowhere to be found.\u00a0Angela became more and more worried, and she began to search\u00a0more and more frantically. Where could her turtle be? She ran upstairs and\u00a0phoned her best friend, Robert.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cMy turtle is gone!\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert tried to calm her down and comfort her, but Angela became more and more frantic. \u201cWhere is she? I have to find her!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll help you find her,\u201d said Robert. \u201cI\u2019ll come right over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"06\"<\/a><\/p>\n

So Robert rode his bike around the block to Angela\u2019s house. They both began to search the yard, but they couldn\u2019t find the turtle.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe walks pretty fast \u2026\u201d said Angela, almost crying, \u201c\u2026 and likes to hide in holes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Search as they might, they couldn\u2019t find the turtle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere could she be?\u201d demanded Angela.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe she\u2019s gone back,\u201d said Robert.<\/p>\n

\u201cGone where?\u201d asked Angela.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo turtle land,\u201d said Robert, \u201cwith all the other turtles. Maybe you should just let her go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t!\u201d cried Angela. \u201cShe has to come back. I have to find her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it\u2019s better if you let her go,\u201d said Robert. \u201cShe\u2019ll tell all the other turtles about you\u2014how good you were and how wonderful you treated her. Maybe she\u2019s happier in turtle land.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d demanded Angela. \u201cI want her back. I don\u2019t want her in turtle land.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"07\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sun was going down, and the place was darkening. Angela\u2019s mother called from upstairs, \u201cDinner\u2019s ready, Angela.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert thought it was time to go home. \u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d he said, \u201cmaybe you\u2019ll find her in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

He got on his bike and sped home.<\/p>\n

That night Angela could hardly sleep. And when she did, she dreamed of her turtle. She dreamed that her turtle was flying in the sky, and she was running after it. Then the turtle landed on a tree, and she climbed up and caught it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s strange<\/em>, thought Angela when she awoke.\u00a0Turtles don\u2019t have wings.<\/em><\/p>\n

Angela was now very sad and filled with despair. What if her turtle never shows up? She\u2019d be devastated.<\/p>\n

Just then, her eyes glimpsed something over in her neighbor\u2019s yard. There, on a bench in the garden, was Speedy\u2014Angela\u2019s turtle.<\/p>\n

\"09\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The mischievous gardener, Jerry, had crept over stealthily and had stolen the turtle.\u00a0Angela ran over and demanded her turtle, but Jerry insisted that the\u00a0turtle was his. So Angela called the owners of the house, Mr. and Mrs.\u00a0Applejuice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs. Applejuice,\u201d Angela said, \u201cyour gardener stole my turtle and doesn\u2019t want to give it back. He says it is his, but I can prove it is mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can you prove that?\u201d asked Mrs. Applejuice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put green nail polish under its toe!\u201d declared Angela.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Applejuice lifted up the turtle, and there was green nail polish under the turtle\u2019s toe.\u00a0She scolded Jerry and promised to discipline him. Jerry was shocked that he was caught and began to lie. \u201cI only wanted to feed it some cabbage, Mrs. Applejuice \u2026 .\u201d<\/p>\n

\"10\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Mrs. Applejuice took the turtle cautiously from Jerry and handed it to Angela. \u201cHere you go Angela,\u201d she smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you so much, Mrs. Applejuice,\u201d Angela said, smiling in return.<\/p>\n

Hugging Speedy with both hands, Angela ran joyfully over to her home. \u201cMommy!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cI\u2019ve found Speedy!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she picked up the phone and called Robert. \u201cRobert!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cI\u2019ve found Speedy!\u201d<\/p>\n

They were all so excited to hear that Angela found Speedy back. From that day onwards, Angela vowed to be really careful about where she put her dear little Speedy down.<\/p>\n
