People who are thankful for what they already have are always poised to receive more from God. And people who are thankful for what they are yet to receive have the power to bring it into existence through their strong faith, as it is written, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This has been proven scientifically, but the Bible gives us a shining example of what the power of gratitude can do in our lives. And that shining example is the legendary King David who rose from humble beginnings to become the greatest King Israel has ever seen.
Even as a poor shepherd boy tending to his flocks, David would sing songs of praise and thanks to God. Throughout the book of Psalms, David was always thanking God – whether he had a little or a lot – whether he was afflicted or in a state of joy.
At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.
Psalms 119:62 (KJV)
Many people in fortunate circumstances fail to experience inner joy because they keep focusing on what they don’t have, what they missed, and what is lacking in their lives. When we focus on what we don’t have, we become miserable, and attract more negative experiences. On the other hand, when you focus on what you have and you are constantly thanking and praising God for what He has given you, you receive more of God’s goodness in your life.
Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.
Psalms 119:164 (KJV)
There is no doubt that God blesses us more when we are thankful. Gratitude and praising God go hand in hand. You simply cannot have one without the other. And gratitude puts us in a state of joy. It helps us to fulfill God’s commandment when He says, “Be joyful always.”
Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 (NIV)
Make it your duty to count your blessings daily. List the things that God has done for you and thank and praise Him for it, and watch Him do miracles in your life.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!
