The Trouble With Noah’s Ark?

ark photoI got inspired to write this article after seeing a cartoon on Facebook. In the cartoon, an anteater, standing at a booth that was labeled Noah’s Ark says to Noah “you only brought two ants!”

This was a wake up call for me. My mind started to reel back and forth. I thought about the complications of harboring two of every kind of animal in the ark for forty days. Indeed, the trouble of being able to lead in two of EVERY kind of animal seems like a bit of a monumental task to me. But that’s just the start of it. As the anteater in the cartoon says “you only brought two ants!” This brings us to the mystery of how Noah managed to feed all those animals for forty days. When you compound that with the fact that many of those animals might have been carnivores, such as tigers, bears, jaguars…the situation becomes baffling.

I must admit I never thought about the story of Noah’s ark this way before. And for a brief second, the question crossed my mind: is this story a living proof that, as atheists claim, the bible is nothing more than a book of fairy tales? Before I expound on the matter any further, I’d like to give you my answer: absolutely not.

Indeed, the human challenges of leading in two of every kind of animal into an ark and feeding them for forty days might cause many people to raise their eyebrows. Here is a story that gives disbelievers a chance to have fun at the bible’s expense. But the truth is, they might as well be laughing at themselves.

When Jesus walked on earth over 2000 years ago, he went into the wilderness and fasted for forty days. He consumed neither food nor water. Jesus is God in the flesh. And God held hunger in check for forty days and night in His own body. Why couldn’t He have done it for all those animals in Noah’s ark?

Let’s remember that we are talking about the same God who turned water into wine. We’re talking about the same God who told a man who had been buried for five days “come forth” and he did! We’re talking about the same God who parted the red sea, turned water into blood, rained manna from heaven and so many other miracles.

We’re talking about the God who formed the stomach and every part of the human body out of non-existence. This is God Almighty who says “With Me, all things are possible”.

So does the story of Noah’s ark make the bible less credible? Absolutely not! It only makes it more incredible.
