The Location of St. Ignatius Village

St. Ignatius is an Amerindian reserve village located in the Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana, South America.

(The Amerindians are Guyanese first or indigenous people)

(Amerindian reserves are special villages or areas demarcated as belonging to the Amerindian people of Guyana)

The People of St. Ignatius Village

Most of the inhabits of St. Ignatius Village are Amerindians or mixed with Amerindian and other races such as East Indian, Africans, Portuguese and white. In any case, almost all residents of St. Ignatius lean more towards an Amerindian heritage and most residents of mixed races still consider themselves Amerindians.

Religion in St. Ignatius Village

Most residents of St. Ignatius Village (about 99%) belong to a Christian church, either Catholic or Protestant. There may be rare instances of Hindus and Muslims but I have never personally encountered any.

Schools In St. Ignatius Village

St. Ignatius sports the St. Ignatius Secondary School, the St. Ignatius Primary School and the St. Ignatius Nursery School.

Economic Activities In St. Ignatius Village

Some of the main economic activities in St. Ignatius Village are carried out by the St. Ignatius Women’s Helping Hands Community, which is a group of women who work to produce and market products such as peanuts and peanut butter.

Economic Problems In St. Ignatius Village

Even though St. Ignatius Village may not be considered “rich” by any standards, and most of the inhabitants live in very primitive houses, there are very few complaints. The people seem very comfortable with their lives and progress in general, and are very adaptive to their environment.
