Was Guyana Better Under British Rule?

The indigenous peoples of Guyana were the first people to have set foot on Guyana’s soil. Centuries after, Guyana was colonized by the Dutch who ceded it to the British who merged the three counties of Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice to form British Guiana.

After the abolition of slavery in 1838, the British imported labor from India who worked as indentured laborers. While many scholars bash the British for the cruelty of slavery and the slave-like treatment of indentured laborers, it is an almost universally acknowledged fact that life under British rule (before 1966) was much better than life after Guyana became independent and was ruled by the descendants of slaves and indentured laborers.
