The humans often use technologies such as MsN Messenger, Skype, Facebook and Yahoo Messenger to “chat” with friends and relatives in far away countries over the internet. During their chat conversations, the humans often use abbreviations to make their “chat life” much easier.

Here are some chat abbreviations and their meanings. If I am forgetting any, please help me by adding it in the comment box below.

a/s/l or ASL or asl = age, sex location

This chat abbreviation is often used by chatroom users who are meeting people over the internet for the first time, often picking them out of a “chatroom” and starting a one on one conversation. Often, the first thing the chat user tries to determine is the age, sex and location of the person he or she has just made contact with.

brb = be right back

This chat abbreviation is used by a chat user to tell the other person that he or she has to leave the chat session for a while and will return some time later. This time later is often just a few minutes but may very well be days, weeks or months later, if they ever return.
SOS – someone over shoulder (not “save our souls”)

This chat abbreviation is used to communicate in a fast and discrete manner that there is someone over your shoulder and that you need to shrink the chat window immediately. The recipient of this chat abbreviation will understand that the sender will be inactive in the chat session for a while, since he or she cannot continue the private conversation with someone overlooking.
POS – Parent over Shoulder.

This is often used by younger kids to indicate to each other that their parents are over their shoulders and therefore certain types of messages should be restrained, or that they need to shrink the chat window for a while.
LOL or lol -laugh out loud.

This is used to indicate that you are laughing out loud.

LMAO or lmao – This is a stronger version of lol. It indicates that you are not just laughing, you are “laughing your ass off”.
wft or WTF – what the F**k

An exclamation, usually of shock or disbelief.

BOL – or bol – (invented by Patrick Carpen). – Burst out laughing.
This chat abbreviation is used to indicate that the statement or incident is so sharply funny, you “burst out laughing”. It is a stronger version of “lol” but weaker than “lmao”.
rotfl or ROTFL – rolling on the floor laughing.

This indicates that you are gripped with such an intense fit of laughter, you fell off your chair and ended up rolling on the floor laughing.
